Aside from “Jesse’s Girl,” I have never delved into the catalogue of Australian singer-actor Rick Springfield. However, my brother recently introduced me to his song “Don’t Talk To Strangers,” making me regret my previous lack of interest.
“Don’t Talk To Strangers” represents power-pop at its finest. Strong, simple guitar chords abound, and a keyboard helps emphasize the main riff. Springfield carries on a conversation with a chorus of himself. During the hook, he gets in a well-placed growl of, “Baby don’t you talk.” There is even a bridge sung (unnecessarily) in another language. And the music video shows Rick to be a fine actor as well.
