A friend recently sent me several albums by the band Lambchop. Lambchop plays a mixture of country, soul, jazz, and pop, and they have been putting albums out regularly since 1992. I even saw them play a lovely show a few months back, but when I put on their 1998 album What Another Man Spills a couple weeks ago it was the first time I’d actually listened to one of their albums. The second song on What Another Man Spills, “The Saturday Option,” instantly grabbed me. I have no idea what its about or what option it is referring too; it starts with the couplet, “Heaven is a disaster/ You won’t get there any faster,” and goes on to discuss separating beef from stew. But it’s beautiful and unhurried. Lazy, high licks carry the verses, and a tasteful horn section and a more insistent guitar pattern appear during the hook. Lead singer Kurt Wagner intones, “Do the shabby thing, with you.” Whatever he’s referring too, I want in.
