What You Got

William Devaughn and his famed “Be Thankful For What You Got” has been popping up several places lately (here and here). Massive Attack recorded their own version of Devaughn’s track on their 1991 debut, Blue Lines. Massive Attack do a relatively faithful cover, but they shorten the song, flatten and strengthen the percussion, while also adding the sounds of scratching vinyl.  Their biggest adjustment is to strip back the guitar so that the melody is almost entirely bass, drum, and organ, with occasional flurries of riffs and backing vocals busting through the groove.
