Getting Your Kicks

Lately I’ve been unable to resist box sets.  The (probably false) notion that owning every Motown single (that box set happens to be 55 cd’s, containing over 1000 songs) or all of a single artist’s output leads to a better understanding of what the artist or label were doing can be very seductive.  (Plus libraries like to buy box sets, so you can get them for free instead of paying an exorbitant amount.)  I got my hands on a compilation of all Billie Holiday’s master takes from her 50s recordings with Verve records, a famous jazz label.  It’s only six discs, small fry compared to some of the boxes out there.  “I Get A Kick Out Of You” is one of my favorite tracks, Holiday’s take on a famous Cole Porter song.  Holiday decides to move away from the bluesy base of most of the other tracks.  Instead, the band transitions easily between bossa nova flavored passages and a smooth swing.
